- Dr. Robert Metcalfe, Ethernet Inventor, Ember Chairman, Polaris Ventures Partner
- Andy Wheeler, Ember’s Chief Technology Officer
- Skip Ashton, Ember’s Vice President of Engineering
- Mohamed Awad, Ember’s Director of Business Development
What:
Ember will present several technical and application-focused sessions at Sensors Expo and the ZigBee Developers’ Conference, as well as exhibit its latest ZigBee-compliant networking system at Ember booth # 603.
Sensors Expo sessions include:
- Keynote: The future of embedded networking.
Dr. Bob Metcalfe, Ethernet Inventor, Ember Chairman, Polaris Ventures Partner
June 7, 2006 – 9:00 a.m.
Synopsis: Nearly 7.5 billion microcontrollers shipped worldwide last year...a number that’s expected to surpass 10 billion in 2007. Despite the market’s rapid growth and technological advances, relatively few of today’s embedded controllers are networked. Ethernet inventor Bob Metcalfe knows that change is on the horizon. In this forward-looking presentation, Dr. Metcalfe illustrates the emerging structure of the embedded networking space; a structure he has dubbed “CSI” (Control, Sensor, and Identity). Here, he examines the current state of the CSI space -- including the characteristics and capabilities of those three technology types -- and assesses the likely direction of control networking protocols. Don’t miss this important opportunity to learn how the principles of Ethernet connectivity will shape the emerging world of microcontroller networking.
- Making commercial building automation a reality
Mohamed Awad, Director of Business Development
June 7, 2006 – 11:30 a.m.
This session will explore how commercial building automation based on ZigBee-ready wireless networking technology is making it possible for facility builders, owners and managers to provide increased occupant comfort, greater flexibility, and more efficient control of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
ZigBee Developers’ Conference sessions include:
- Building ZigBee networks with Ember’s InSight Development Environment
June 6, 2006 – two sessions – 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
A hands-on training session using Ember’s rapid application development toolkit.
- ZigBee and WiFi Coexistence Testing
Andy Wheeler, Chief Technology Officer
June 7, 2006 – 4:00 p.m.
ZigBee networks are being deployed in homes and businesses. WiFi (802.11b/g) is already widely deployed in these environments. Both of these network standards share the same 2.4 GHz ISM band. Interference between these two standards is a concern for anyone looking to deploy products based on the ZigBee standard. This paper will present a test methodology for analyzing the interference between 802.11 and ZigBee/802.15.4 radios, present actual test data from several ZigBee radios, and propose strategies for minimizing this type of interference.
- ZigBee Network Performance Metrics
Skip Ashton, Vice President of Engineering
June 7, 2006 – 5:00 p.m.
This paper reviews critical ZigBee network performance parameters and presents test results and analysis for use by system designers and developers to consider in their application design. The metrics include network formation time, join time, throughput and latency versus hop count, the effect of security being on or off, and many to one routing performance. This basic performance data for ZigBee networks can provide valuable design guidelines.
About Ember Corporation
Ember enables communication among embedded microcontrollers with standards-based wireless mesh networking semiconductors and software. Ember helps its customers to automate home appliances, lower energy consumption in buildings, keep borders and infrastructure secure, and control industrial processes, just to name four of the many diverse applications being developed by Ember’s more than 100 customers. Spun out of MIT in 2001, Ember is headquartered in Boston and has its radio development center in Cambridge, England, and distributors worldwide. Ember is a lead member of the ZigBee Alliance, and its platform is the National Technical Systems’ (NTS) “Golden Suite” for 802.15.4/ZigBee interoperability testing.
